With limited supervision and based on extensive experience, academic study, and/or expertise, provides complex technical support for the Facilities Management - Utility and Engineering High Voltage Group. Specific areas of assignment will be to help oversee generator contracted maintenance for the entire 6,800-acre site as well as understanding, and working in conjunction with the rest of the HV group on the maintenance and all operational features of the High Voltage distribution system (345KV – 13.8Kv), which includes, but is not limited to two (2) large substations, HV switches and transformers of all sizes and configurations, and at times, being able to aid other lab entities across divisional and sectional lines in distribution and devices operating at voltages under 13.8KV.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Help oversee backup generator operations and contracted maintenance for both critical experimental operations and conventional facility power for the entire 6,800-acre site
Develops specifications, designs, and documents for complex engineering design solutions. Work involves applying a variety of standard engineering techniques to assignments which have clear and specified objectives.
Plans small projects from inception to completion and brings them to operating status.
Assist with oversight during High Voltage outages required for various distribution repairs or modifications.
Direct Electricians efforts in LOTO activities, ensuring safe work environment.
Write standard and custom Hazard Analysis procedures for all work performed by the High Voltage Group.
Participates in procurement, manufacturing, installation, testing, and operation. Takes a lead role
in one or more of these project processes.
Learn and assist with the operation and maintenance of the two (2) on site High Voltage substations.
Perform preventive and complex maintenance for a wide variety of instruments and equipment, troubleshooting of problems and repairs as needed. Includes ability to perform Hipot, TTR, and relay testing.
Redline as built drawings ensuring complete accuracy.
Monitor, report, and repair if necessary energy use meters. Assist in new installations of same.
Respond to and lead operational and emergency High Voltage responses.
Recognize, procure, and maintain inventories of small parts, supplies, materials, and equipment for area of assignment
Analyzes data and performs engineering calculations. Develops designs of specific parts, components or phases of a project.
Assists in the development of cost estimates, as well as the monitoring of budgetary obligations.
With review and approval of supervisor, commits hardware and financial resources, ensuring conformance to specifications and cost/time constraints.
Serves on or takes a lead role in safety panels, review committees, and other subcommittees as assigned.
Provides technical direction to draftspersons, designers, engineering associates, technicians or less senior engineers, as assigned.
May participate in technical conferences and publication.
Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Abides by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.
Minimum Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s in an applicable Engineering discipline from an ABET accredited institution with 4+ years of engineering experience, or a Master’s or PhD in an applicable Engineering discipline from an ABET accredited institution with 2+ years of engineering experience.
Applicable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
Fundamental knowledge of theories, concepts, principles, and methodology for the engineering discipline. Possess basic project planning skills in developing specifications and documents for small to medium projects that involve concepts from inception to completion. Ability to perform a variety of standard engineering techniques.
