Mechanical Technician

Our client is America’s premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois and at locations around the world, including deep underground mines in South Dakota and Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and the South Pole.
Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory Particle Physics Division (PPD), seeks a Mechanical Technician to join their team. Working with limited supervision the candidate will provide technical support in the construction, maintenance, and operation of complex mechanical and fluid process systems. Experience with machine and hand tools is required as are basic skills with computers and control systems. The candidate will perform mechanical assembly; working from specific drawings, diagrams, schematics, and verbal instructions. Work will include the operation of detector systems requiring 24/7 rotating shift coverage.

You Will:

  • Monitor operation of physics detectors and superconducting magnets
  • Maintain knowledge and awareness of equipment status and changes
  • Diagnose and fix routine problems affecting performance
  • Document shift activities and repairs in the logbook
  • Carry out first level troubleshooting and perform minor repair of equipment.
  • Communicate with system experts as necessary.
  • Respect, understand and value individual differences that embody the principles of diversity.
  • Abide by all environmental, safety and health regulations.

We Are Looking For:

  • HS Degree or equivalent and relevant work experience.
  • Experience working on mechanical systems.
  • Perform basic set-up, operation, testing, fabrication, modification, repair, and maintenance of mechanical systems.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Must be proficient in working in a Windows PC environment, using Outlook
  • Experience in HVAC repair with a good understanding of basic refrigeration and pressure temperature (PT) charts preferred
  • Ability to operate fork trucks and overhead cranes, preferred.
  • Conduct safety inspections preferred.

  • Ability to meet Oxygen Deficiency Hazard (ODH) and radiation worker requirements
